With an eye for striking shapes and spontaneous beauty, Portland based photographer Clayton Cotterell seeks to capture naturally occurring abstractions.
In his series Arrangements, Clayton Cotterell uses traditional techniques and viewpoints to produce modern photographic abstraction. A creased towel, the soft shapes of gently rippled water, the shadow of a bird; simply the spontaneous beauty of everyday life.
– In Arrangements, I am recognizing and allowing for spontaneous encounters of light, color, and form, as they occur in the world around me, the photographer says on his series. I seek out naturally occurring abstractions in reference to the continuously evolving language of the image.
Based in Portland, Clayton Cotterell’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, as well as featured in a number of publications. This summer, his Arrangements series will be gathered into a book, published by Ampersand Gallery & Fine Books.
