M.I.A. and Versace

Inspired by the creativity of fashion bootleggers, British artist and musician M.I.A. tears up the rulebook with her exceptional capsule collection for Versus Versace.

It has now been confirmed that M.I.A. is the latest figure to design a capsule collection for Versace’s younger and more affordable Versus line. Inspired by Versace knockoffs, the artist has designed an exceptional collection that reinterprets the Italian fashion house’s signature motifs with a London street style edge. Riffing on classic sportswear, the collection combines golden medallions with Sanskrit-inspired lettering and glowing lotus flowers.

– The theme of counterfeits, of those that produce and sell them has always been part of the culture of M.I.A., the artist said on the collection’s theme. When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle. Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.

– I adore the energy of the street, so when M.I.A. proposed to expose the issue of counterfeit Versace pieces by creating a collaboration inspired by these items, I thought it was an incredible idea, Donatella Versace added. The collection represents all that I love of the new Versus Versace: it’s fast, it’s noisy, it’s brazen and it blends the world of music with that of fashion.

The nineteen-piece collection includes t shirts, printed jeans, silk blouses, jersey dresses, and military jackets, juxtaposing masculine and feminine, street and luxury.

M.I.A.’s capsule collection for Versus Versace will be available online and in selected stores from October 16. M.I.A.’s new album Matangi drops on November 5. Read more about it here.
