High fashion shoes for a balanced future. Mats Rombaut designs footwear for men who are as conscious about their style as they are about the environment.
Belgian shoe designer Mats Rombaut is inspired by nature in both literal and metaphorical sense. With his avantgarde men’s footwear concept ROMBAUT, Mats Rombaut designs shoes for men who are as conscious about their style as they are about the environment. By eliminating toxic and animal-derived substances in the process, he blends high fashion with ecological awareness. Instead of conventional materials like leather, suede, and rubber, he uses natural materials such as fig treebark from Uganda, mulberry tree bark from the Islands of South Pacific, coconut fibres, and Amazon latex. The shoes are all hand dyed and crafted in Italy.
Mats Rombaut spent five years in men’s accessories development and production at Lanvin and Damir Doma, before he decided to start a business of his own. That he chose to work solely with footwear might not bee too surprising, knowing that both his father and grandfather worked as shoemakers in his native Belgium. The premiere collection signed ROMBAUT will be launched this autumn, and it has already been endorsed by high fashion retailers around the world. Last week the collection for spring summer 2014 could be seen walking down the catwalk at fellow Belgian designer Cedric Jacquemyn’s show in Paris. The collection is called Walking On Thin Ice, inspired by melting icebergs and the current climate changes. As for autumn winter 2013, the spring collection includes boots, shoes, sneakers, and sandals in a rough, yet timeless and minimalistic design. See both collections below.
