Best of 2013: Radar Magazine

The year 2013 is coming to an end, and so is the first year since the relaunch of Radar Magazine.

It has been a year filled to the brim with wonderful meetings, smashing events, and fantastic discoveries. Here we share some of this year’s highlights, from the stunning designs by Lina Michal to Gavin Watson’s candid photographs of skins to James Blake’s childhood memories.

Lina Michal
This summer, we caught up with bright young design talent Lina Michal to learn more about her dark, yet playful collection Heathen Hearts. Since then, she’s won MUUSE and Vogue Talents’ Young Vision Award, moved to New York, started an internship at Opening Ceremony, and began to blog here on Radar Magazine.

INCIPIT
During their second year at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, four young students decided to form a design collective. They call themselves INCIPIT – it begins in Latin. This autumn they travelled across Europe with their second showcase tour, and we met with designers Henrik Hiltula and Peter Schamaun before their stop in Stockholm.

After a taste of indie pop stardom in Those Dancing Days, Cissi Efraimsson and Lisa Pyk Wirström have started something completely new and totally wild with their duo Vulkano. This autumn saw the release of their debut album Live Wild, Die Free, and we met them to talk about music and madness.

Arter
– We want the images to express something more, something far away from the human sphere.

Through an artistic use of styling, set design, make up, and photography, creative trio Arter has invented a universe of their own. We met with the trio to talk about inspirations, species, and why the beautiful can be boring.

Ever Rêve
– The name Ever Rêve is a palindrome and has a very beautiful meaning, ever – in English, and rêve – to dream in French.

We met with young fashion designer Michelle Urvall-Nyren to talk about her emerging brand Ever Rêve, inspirations, and creativity.

Tove Lo
With no more than three singles released, Tove Lo has distinguished herself as one of Scandinavia’s most distinctive and promising pop voices. We met with Tove in her Stockholm studio to talk about her background as a songwriter, how she found her voice, and a very special lynx.

With her exceptional collection Dreamwards, beautifully captured by Radar Magazine contributor Pauline Suzor, emerging designer Alina Brane has explored a sense of enclosing claustrophobia. Stunningly beautiful, it hints at something deeply human and slightly unsettling. We caught up with the young designer to learn more.

Stromae
He rose to fame with the single Alors on Dance a few years back, and this autumn, Belgian artist Stromae returned with his taut second album Racine Carrée. We met him during a short stop in Stockholm to talk about melancholy, storytelling, and style.

Gavin Watson
– I fell in love with their music, and fell in love with what they stood for. And they were skinheads, so I became a skinhead.

His photographs of skins and punks have been hailed as the most important photographic record of the skinhead movement. We caught up with legendary photographer Gavin Watson to talk about demonisation, Dr. Martens, and This Is England.

James Blake
– When I come on stage, everything becomes very lucid, very clear, and very immediate. I love that feeling.

With his distinctive voice and spacious, minimalist sound, James Blake has brought something new into the music world. We met with the British musician to talk about music ties, loneliness, and how he found his voice.

Museum of Bellas Artes
This November, Swedish electro-pop trio Museum of Bellas Artes cut the ribbon on their highly anticipated debut album Pieces. We met with band members Joanna Herskovits, Alice Luther Näsholm, and Leonard Öhman over a coffee around the corner from their studio, to talk about the album, their influences, and their ambivalence towards live shows.
