For the second time in a row, Swedish fashion brand Hunkydory surprised everyone by having an artist perform at their fashion show last week. This time it was the Australian songbird Tiaan Williams.
Earlier this year, Swedish fashion brand Hunkydory surprised everyone by having up-and-coming soul singer Kim Cesarion perform at their AW13 show. When the brand showed their SS14 collection last week it was the Australian songbird Tiaan Williams who embellished their show her sensual and dramatic soul pop. We met with Tiaan backstage to learn more about her and her background.
– I grew up in Sydney, Austraila, where my dad was a musician, Tiaan says. I began singing in school, and when I was old enough to sing in clubs I joined my father on stage. I did the record label thing for a while, but now I’m ready to try new things, so that’s why I’m here, in Stockholm. My next step is to deal with over seas labels, and finish my album, which hopefully will be released by the end of the year.
Watching her father on stage, Tiaan decided early on that she too wanted to take the music scene by storm. Now residing in Stockholm, she is working on her debut album, and her performance at the Hundydory show was the first delightful taste of what’s to come.
How would you describe your music?
– You can’t really have a genre these days, it’s just good music. But if I had to describe it I would say that it’s pop-soul. No, pop-soul-electro, that sounds kind of cool!
– I have a bit of a soul and r’n’b background from my father, so it’s kind of easy to pinpoint that genre. But it’s a process of elimination really, you just write and write and write, until you find something that fits you and your sound.
Where do you find influences?
– Everything influences me.
How was it to perform at a fashion show, compared to a regular venue?
–It was definitely different. You feel like you have to impress people way more because it’s not a music crowd, so it was that little extra stress. You know the fashion crowd, Tiaan says laughing. I’ve always had a interest in fashion though. And I love to wear beautiful clothes like this, she says, pointing to her long, white Hunkydory dress with fringes and studs. I think the show turned out stunning.
Expect to hear more from Tiaan Williams in the coming months.
