Under the Radar: Maria Minerva

Born in her Estonian bedroom out of boredom, desperation, and loneliness, Brooklyn based musician Maria Minerva is making the most enthralling and eclectic dance music. Here she unveils what she mostly wears and what music genre she considers to be her first love.

Would like to meet…
– Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Max Martin is Swedish. Why are so many amazing songwriters from Sweden? Do you have a special school somewhere? Anyway, I think the world’s fascination with singers is silly, it should be all about the people who actually come up with these songs that creep into our brains and stay there FOREVER.

Most memorable night out…
– Ok, so since I am a musician, my work life=night life. I usually have more fun staying in these days. But last Saturday I went to a bar in Brooklyn around 10 pm and stayed til 4 am, and realized for the first time that maybe I actually do know some people in this city now, and that I am not an alien. So that felt nice.

My greatest extravagance…
– Nothing special, I like to be in my bathrobe as much as possible, I hate getting up early cos then I probably didn’t fall asleep the night before. I like to do a lot of things in bed, including working and eating. I guess the need for such comfort could be considered an extravagance.

In my next life…
– I wouldn’t really do anything differently.

Wouldn’t recommend…
– Becoming a musician? I don’t really think there are any rules in life, everything is worth trying at least once…

My hero…
– Brian Eno. I like how someone with no formal musical education crossed from the underground to the mainstream, like how do you create a whole new experimental music genre (ambient) AND produce for U2 as well, all this in the course of one life? Def someone I look up to, since I tend to have similar aspirations. Gotta think big, and do a billion different things at the same time.

I don’t really think there
are any rules in life, everything
is worth trying at least once

Before I die…
– Invent a new genre? I don’t have a bucket list. I am not interested in fancy stuff and etc, all this comes down to consumerism in the end and I don’t think a human being was born into this world to participate in this cynical economy that we all share. It’s more about personal growth and developing your talents, if it results in money and getting some crazy opportunities then fine. But I think quiet life is the best, just getting some “work” done within.

Hidden talent…
– I’m a really fast reader.

Just discovered…
– Mike Tyson’s biography and, well, Mike Tyson. Really fascinating read anout a guy who came from the slums of Brooklyn, made – AND SPENT – 300 million dollars and then found Islam. It’s crazy and funny, recommended!

Dances to…
– House music, my first love.

Laughs at…
– Boyfriend making fun of my accent.

Wears…
– Umm, bathrobe? Like seriously, I was making music these last few days, didn’t go out for two days and had my bathrobe on the whole time and it felt fucking fantastic.

Most visited website…
– Do you want a “cool” answer or an honest answer? Honest answer is Facebook. But I have the excuse of having lived in four different countries so it’s good to know what everyone is up to.

Most read book…
– Trying to get a drivers license this year, so I am mainly reading the theory book about parallel parking and etc, fascinating read.

Most viewed You Tube video…
– It’s this stupid tutorial in Estonian, where a guy “teaches” viewers how to create a new folder in Windows operating system. It’s really funny. Internet / computer nostalgia always is.

This spring will see the release of Maria Minerva’s new album. While waiting, listen to her previous ones here.
