Under the Radar: Silvana Imam

Merging poetry with politics, Stockholm rapper Silvana Imam is one of the strongest and most conscious voices in the Swedish hip hop scene. Here she reveals which rapper she would like to talk some sense to and what nickname her basketball coaches gave her.

Would like to meet…

– Jay-Z, so I can talk him straight about his line on Beyoncé’s Drunk In Love, where he uses a reference to domestic violence in a positive sense. So ignorant and stupid!

Most memorable night out…
– New York 2008 when I was at the same dinner table as Jay-Z, Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo. That was surreal and awesome until Dikembe asked me out on a date, then it became awkward.

My greatest extravagance…
– My expensive obsession with scents and perfume.

In my next life…
– I’ll pursue my basketball dreams and make it to the WNBA. My coaches called me “The Pen Warrior” (because I wrote poems in the locker room) which I thought was too soft! I wanted to be the beast on the court.

Wouldn’t recommend…
– To not free yourself from patriarchy. Also, coffee without milk is nasty.

My hero…

– My mother!!!!

Before I die…

– I need to stay in the Amazon rainforest with my wife. Not forever, but for like three months.

Hidden talent…

– I’m extremely good at numbers.

Just discovered…

– Quark with nuts and honey for breakfast. This girl made me obsessed with it.

Dances to…

– Sofia Neves and her magical DJ skills.

Laughs at…

– Ida Klamborns’ accent :)

Wears…

– My heart on my sleeve! And hoodies.

Most visited website…
– Prolly YouTube or Soundcloud… No wait, mos def Soundcloud.

Most read book…

– Ayn Rand The Fountainhead, third time reading it as we write.

Most viewed YouTube video…
– Man-eating anacondas and NBA Top 10 plays of the week.

– I just discovered this little monster:

Listen to Silvana Imam’s latest single Jag Är En Fakkin Gee above. A new EP will be released later this spring.
